The Coalition for Sustainable AI: a global commitment for the future of our planet

On February 11, 2025, during the Forum for Sustainable AI, stamped as the International Summit for Action on AI, the Coalition for Sustainable AI was officially launched. This pioneering initiative aims to bring together governments, industries, research institutions, and civil society around a common goal: to align the development of artificial intelligence (AI) with global environmental objectives.
Why a Coalition for Sustainable AI?

AI offers significant potential to help address global ecological challenges, whether it is to optimize energy networks, monitor deforestation, or accelerate the transition to renewable energies. However, its growing deployment is accompanied by a concerning environmental footprint, particularly due to the current and future energy and resource consumption linked to hardware infrastructure and model training processes.
The fragmentation of existing initiatives threatens to diminish their impact. The Coalition for Sustainable AI positions itself as a primary solution to this challenge, fostering effective international collaboration and amplifying efforts for an AI that respects planetary boundaries.
An open and inclusive structure
Initiated by the French government, the International Telecommunication Union, and UNEP, this project is structured around two main categories of participants:
- Members: companies, associations, and research institutions engaged in concrete actions.
- Supports: governments and international organizations contributing to the global momentum.
While it does not rely on binding legal commitments, the Coalition draws its strength from the shared willingness of its participants to adopt responsible and sustainable practices. Ultimately, a UN inter-agency working group could continue the momentum by integrating these initiatives into international discussions.
An ambitious mission
The Coalition’s activities focus on two main axes:
- A platform to mobilize stakeholders: connect actors committed to sustainable AI.
- A hub of initiatives: promote collaborative and international projects aligned with environmental objectives.
These projects include, for example, standards for measuring the ecological footprint of AI, life cycle analyses, or efforts to develop less resource-intensive algorithmic models.
Join the movement
Organizations wishing to become members or supporters can join the “Shared Vision” of the Coalition via the official website www.sustainableaicoalition.org. This commitment will allow them to:
- Assert their leadership in the field of sustainable AI.
- Join a global network of dedicated actors.
- Multiply their impact by contributing to collective actions.
About a hundred members have already joined the coalition, discover them here!

A vision for the future
The ultimate goal of the Coalition is to ensure that AI becomes an essential lever for addressing global environmental challenges while minimizing its ecological footprint. By collaborating with major events such as the Conferences of the Parties on climate or biodiversity, the G7 works, the Coalition fits into a sustainable and evolving dynamic.
The Coalition for Sustainable AI thus marks a turning point in how humanity intends to harness the possibilities opened up by the use of AI for an ecological and resilient future.
