Energy Supplier 2.0: Software startup BeeBryte is launching a revolutionary offering for energy supply at reduced rates for commercial and industrial buildings while minimizing their carbon footprint.
To offer you electricity at a fixed price or during off-peak/peak hours, energy suppliers don’t need to own any means of production. They source their energy from wholesale electricity markets at prices that vary according to the changing balance between supply and demand.
The variability and uncertainty surrounding customers’ aggregate consumption, combined with the volatility of electricity prices, generates an intrinsic financial risk for the supplier. The supplier reduces this risk by refining its consumption predictions and optimizing its diversified purchases across the various energy products available on the market, under varying conditions and timeframes. This risk hedging strategy has a cost that is passed on to the price per kWh billed to the end consumer. This traditional model is now being challenged by a young Lyon-based startup, BeeBryte, which has been winning a string of innovation awards and prizes since 2015 (EDF Pulse 2016, Greentech Verte, and Dena’s Energy Transition Award 2017). BeeBryte transforms buildings into smart building blocks of the electricity grid and leverages their thermal and electrical flexibility to preferentially consume or store energy when it is cheaper and greener.
Using advanced learning, forecasting and optimization technologies, the BeeBryte platform develops and deploys in real time an optimal operating strategy for controlled equipment. In complete transparency, your consumption is imperceptibly modulated according to energy price signals. Automatic and without perceptible impact on services or user comfort, this intelligent management reveals new niches of flexibility, and promotes them on wholesale markets. BeeBryte thus offers energy at more attractive prices than those of traditional suppliers, making buildings players in the energy transition.Properly managing the flexibility of your building also makes it possible to maximize self-consumption of locally produced renewable energies and presents new opportunities for balancing and resilience for the network, in a “win-win” vision. With the support of ADEME and BPI, BeeBryte has already deployed its solution on several operational sites. The startup has been marketing its technology since the beginning of the year and helps its customers save on their electricity bill without changing supplier. In autumn 2017, it will offer an integrated energy supply offer and will then specify the amount of reduction proposed. BeeBryte also promises the announcement of a strategic partnership with a European energy company which will certainly help to consolidate its commercial offer.
How does it work?
BeeBryte initially focuses on customers operating large heating-air conditioning (HVAC) systems or cold units and uses thermal inertia by playing on temperature setpoints to make the most of the variability of market prices. But BeeBryte has more than one string to its bow, and beyond wholesale price arbitrage, its solution also allows customers to reduce their subscription costs (TURPE) by reducing their peak power demand.
For some consumers, BeeBryte can also offer the installation of a battery used as a buffer capacity and controlled by charging or discharging based on electricity price signals to further reduce their bill.
The startup cultivates flexibility even in its offering, giving the customer control over their equipment and service activation. If they wish to interrupt it, BeeBryte recovers their interface equipment, and the building manager regains their original control over their equipment.
BeeBryte aims to facilitate and enhance this active role for consumers by giving them maximum visibility and understanding of their consumption, from metering to billing, using all the capabilities of the latest IT technologies. Although it’s not yet targeting the residential sector, BeeBryte promises to break the mold of energy supply with its Digital Utility 2.0 offering, capable of harnessing the full potential of the massive development of storage solutions, and foreshadowing our relationship with energy in the decades to come.
